2021.10.13: I won a bid for a suspicious unit from a recycle store.
The front PU had been replaced with an L-500XL and the Vol was also coil-tapable with a switch pot, and for some reason the back panel and tension bar on the controls were missing.
The tremolo back panel is unusual in that it was made to the original specifications with no screw holes, but the color seems to have been repainted in lacquer.
The color seems to have been repainted with lacquer.
The frets have been replaced, and I assume that the sticker was removed at that time as well.
I could tell that the work was done by someone with some understanding of electrical systems, but the worker did not seem to have a high level of technical skill, as he did not correct the screw holes in the escutcheon and the sticker was peeling off.
The paint also has many cracks like weather checks from the inside.
2021.10.17: The front PU was replaced with an SH-1n, the same as the factory one, along with an escutcheon, and the missing tension bar was added, and the Vol pot was assembled with a CTS B500k ohm pot that is millimeter compatible with the mounting holes.
The jack and spring hanger were apparently left in place during the painting process, and were stained with paint, so they were replaced as well.
I used a noiseless metal knob for the vol knob.
The bridge saddle was not clean enough, so spacers were added to the 2nd, 4th, and 5th strings.
The two Japanese locknuts I have had so far were R2 on the Padouk and Takeuchi on the Alder, but this one has R3, so even if you could have bought a new one at the time, I think there was some element of gambling in a way due to the variation in production lots.
2021.11.5: The frets were not too worn, but there was a lot of visible fret lift, and the fingerboard was wavy and damaged, so I had it resized and replaced with a Jescar 55090 nickel.
The missing companses were also made based on the ones that came with the padouk.
The sustain block of the bridge was replaced with 32mm.
2021.12.27: The decal of Stephan that had peeled off was repaired.
2022.4.15: The body was repainted and had a lot of cracks, but I didn't like it, so I had it refinished in satin natural color.
The natural color is a little yellowish, so in a sense, the color is a little closer to the current product.
2022.5.2: The bridge saddle, nut cap screws and insert blocks were replaced with stainless steel ones.
I also replaced the pegs with the current GOTOH 05-button pegs that are commonly used on domestic N4s, so I think I have pretty much restored the original specs.
2023.6: Sold due to infrequent use and a replica Walnut N4 machine.
